The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor provides the ECM with data about the engine's operating temperature. This information is critical for:

- Adjusting ignition timing.
How it Works

- A sensor that reports a cold engine when it is actually hot will likely cause a rich condition, potentially leading to poor fuel economy and black exhaust smoke.
- If the cooling fans run constantly even when the engine is cold, it suggests a potential issue with the ECT sensor or its circuit.

While the basic principle is common, the resistance-to-temperature curve is manufacturer dependent.
