The engine control module monitors the pulse frequency and timing alignment from the camshaft position sensor to coordinate fuel injection and ignition spark. A fault is registered when the expected camshaft sensor pulses are missing, erratic, or out of sync with the crankshaft position signal during starting or active engine operation.
