The supervising module watches the CAN (Controller Area Network) for the cruise control module's regular heartbeat message. When those updates stop arriving for longer than the software's timeout allows, the fault registers. It is confirmed when the module also fails to answer several polling requests in a row during an active ignition cycle, so the system gives it more than one chance before declaring it lost.
