Network Communication Codes (U-Series)

What Are U-Codes?

U-codes (Network/Undefined codes) represent communication failures between vehicle control modules. These are among the most challenging codes to diagnose because they indicate indirect problems in vehicle networking infrastructure.

A U-code doesn't mean a specific component failed. Instead, it means that expected communication between modules isn't happening on schedule.

Vehicle Communication Networks

Modern vehicles use multiple communication protocols:

CAN Bus (Controller Area Network)

The primary vehicle communication network:

  • High-speed CAN: Engine, transmission, and critical systems
  • Medium-speed CAN: Comfort and convenience systems
  • Individual modules broadcast status messages periodically
  • All modules receive and interpret relevant messages
  • Operates at 250 Kbps to 1 Mbps depending on implementation

LIN Bus (Local Interconnect Network)

Secondary network for less critical systems:

  • Lower-speed communication (10 Kbps)
  • Used for climate control, lighting, seat adjustment
  • Connected to a gateway module that bridges to CAN

K-Line and Other Protocols

Some older vehicles and specialized systems use alternate protocols:

  • Used primarily for diagnostic communication
  • Not part of vehicle operational networks

Common U-Code Issues

Module Power Supply Failure

A module that loses power cannot communicate:

  • Blown fuse dedicated to that module
  • Bad ground connection
  • Failed power relay
  • Corroded connections

Communication Line Damage

CAN and LIN bus lines can be damaged:

  • Corroded wiring or connectors
  • Damaged insulation causing shorts
  • Pinched or broken wires
  • Water intrusion and corrosion in connectors

Module Hardware Failure

Internal module failures prevent communication:

  • Microprocessor failure
  • Communication transceiver failure
  • Memory corruption
  • Software malfunction

Intermittent Communication Loss

Most challenging to diagnose:

  • Poor electrical connections that work intermittently
  • Moisture that affects communication only under certain conditions
  • Temperature-dependent module behavior
  • Timing-sensitive communication failures

Network Diagnostic Approach

Step 1: Document Communication Status

Use diagnostic tools to check:

  • Which modules are present on the network
  • Which modules are responding to requests
  • Which specific communication is absent
  • When the communication failure occurs

Step 2: Check Physical Layer

The CAN bus is a two-wire twisted pair:

  • Measure CAN High and CAN Low voltages (should differ by ~2.5V at idle)
  • Verify no shorts between CAN lines
  • Check for AC signal on CAN bus during communication
  • Verify termination resistance at network ends (~120Ω)

Step 3: Check Module Power and Ground

Each module must have:

  • Proper power supply voltage
  • Good ground connection to chassis
  • No moisture in electrical connectors

Step 4: Isolate the Failing Module

If communication from one module is missing:

  • Check its specific power supply
  • Verify its ground connections
  • Check for error codes within that module
  • Determine if the module needs replacement or reprogramming

Step 5: Check Recent Service History

Many U-codes develop after service work:

  • Connector disconnections during repair
  • Wiring disturbed during maintenance
  • Module replaced with incorrect part number
  • Software not properly flashed after module replacement

Examples of Network Issues

U0100 (Lost Communication with ECM)

The engine control module is not responding on the network. Usually caused by:

  • ECM power loss
  • Ground connection failure
  • ECM replacement with wrong part or corrupted software
  • CAN bus damage preventing ECM communication

U0109 (Lost Communication with Fuel Pump Control)

The fuel pump control module went offline. Often caused by:

  • Fuel pump relay failure
  • Wiring damage in fuel tank area
  • Corrosion in fuel pump module connectors
  • Module internal failure
